Summer Fun for Seniors

Summer fun for seniors

Summer is a great time to be outdoors doing fun activities, getting some fresh air, and also getting natural source of vitamin D.

At every age, outdoor activities can be very different. As people get older, their ideas of “exercise” and “fun” are just not the same as they use to be. With a different mindset, older people can have just as much fun as those young folk, if not more.

There are many risks with outdoor activities that everyone should be cautious of, just to be safe. As people age, they become more prone to heat-related illnesses and their bodies do not heal and recover as fast. Everyone involved in outdoor activities needs to be safe and know the symptoms.

Everyone needs to have a little fun in the sun over summer, children, adults, and even seniors. Here are a few summer activities and safety tips to help anyone at any age have a great and relaxing summer.

Go for a walk

Exercise has proven to improve health, especially in elderly people. It helps keep bones and muscle strength up, and it also promotes weight loss and improves sleep. As people age, their joints become stiff, but by walking, which is a low-impact exercise, oxygen and nutrients are pushed into the cartilage which increases fluid to the joints. Not only is it good for the body, it improves the moods of everyone involved.

Have a picnic

Everyone loves food, so why not pack up a picnic basket full of some favorite foods and head to the local park for a nice relaxing meal in the sun. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water to wash everything down. Water is an extremely essential part of your day, so make sure to drink at least 8 glasses throughout the day and you may want to pack a little extra if you are going to be out in the sun.

See a movie

Most cities have an outdoor movie at a local park during summertime, check local listing to see if your city does. If it does, pack up the family and snacks, and go watch one of the classic movies under the stars! If not, beat the heat and go to your local movie theater. This is a great way to get out of the house and spend some quality time with the whole family.

Watching a high-impact sport will get the adrenaline pumping through the veins, in a safe and exciting way. Even though you may not be out on the field, baseball is a great sport to get involved watching.

Everyone loves to have fun in the sun, but we want everyone to be safe. When planning a day out, make sure to pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. You may also want to bring an extra pair of clothes, shoes, and socks, you never know when you are going to need a quick change of clothes or need to add another layer!

Stay safe and have fun this summertime!
